Chapter Sixteen

Zac

The warm air hit me as I stepped out of the cool, air-conditioned car.

“See you in a couple of hours, Robert,” I said to my driver as I closed the door of the Merc. I no longer had access to my father’s Bentley – one of the many privileges, including his vast vintage car collection, he’d stripped me of since his unwelcome return to the UK – but I’d kept Robert. I’d saved him from being fired. Who else would he have driven around? Mother had her own chauffeur, and my father certainly wasn’t going anywhere.

I walked across the road towards the South Bank centre. It was a Saturday, and heaving, and I cursed my sister for dragging me out here to the heart of touristville in the middle of the hottest summer on record.

“Ah, you English dweeb,” she’d berated me over the phone, in her annoyingly charming Australian accent. “You never see the city you live in. And Katrina desperately wants to go to the Tate Modern and sit by the river with a white wine spritzer. Come on, Uncle Zac, you might enjoy yourself.”

I cringed at the name. With Grace out of the country for half my life and me having never met my niece, I’d never thought of myself as an uncle. It made me feel suddenly old, and I already felt aged after everything that happened last night.

I’d walked away from Nobu with nothing but anger and pain in my chest. But when I got home, back to my apartment further up the river, I felt guilt-ridden and strangely broken. It had been the best and worst night of my life. We’d just finalised all the work with Harvard; it was going to put me and my business on a whole other map. We’d had the most delicious dinner at my favourite restaurant in the world – I found myself wondering if Jess had known that when she booked it. And then it happened. She happened.

After Boston, I honestly thought she had no interest in me, beyond the fact I was her boss. I was stunned to have been proven so wrong. I still couldn’t believe how brazen and honest she’d been about her desire, her need for me to fuck her. I’d had a lot of women since Eton, but never before one who’d literally melted all over me. And I’d genuinely had no idea she felt so strongly. I loved soothing her and fixing her, and hell, I got a lot out of it too, but for the first time in a long time, it was more important for me to give her what she needed. I was responsible. I’d made her feel that way to begin with; the least I could do was free her from all that pent-up sexual tension. To say I got a lot out of it was an understatement, though. I’d wanted to do that since the day I first laid eyes on her, and I told her as much, stupidly.
